🌊 Celebrating World Ocean Day with Guernsey Sailing Trust: Our Ocean, Our Responsibility

The 8th of June is World Ocean Day 1, we pause to honour the vast blue that surrounds our island home—our classroom, playground, and shared responsibility.

Why World Ocean Day Matters

World Ocean Day is a global celebration and call to action to protect our seas and the life within them. It is a powerful reminder that every single one of us has a role to play in preserving marine ecosystems—from individuals and communities to schools and sailing centres like ours.

The ocean generates 50 percent of the oxygen we need, absorbs 30 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions and captures 90 percent of the excess heat generated2, and is home to a kaleidoscope of biodiversity. Yet, it faces threats from plastic pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, and rising temperatures3.

It’s up to us to turn the tide.

Our Ocean Pledge at Guernsey Sailing Trust

Here at the Trust, we’re proud to integrate environmental education into every sail and powerboat course. Whether our students are learning to ⛵ or navigating open waters in our powerboats šŸ›„, we encourage respect for the ocean through awareness, responsibility, and action.

How You Can Help

We believe in sailing with purpose—and we invite you to join us. Here are a few ways you can make a difference this World Ocean Day and beyond:

🌱 Choose reusables: Bring a reusable water bottle and eco-friendly sun protection when you sail.
ā™»ļø Pick up litter: Whether you’re on land or sea, removing waste helps protect marine life.
šŸ“¢ Raise awareness: Share this post to help spread the message of ocean conservation.
🌊 Learn to sail responsibly: Enroll in one of our courses and learn how to enjoy the water sustainably.

As part of campaigning, World Ocean Day are conducting a year of action.

World Ocean Day’s “12 Months of Action in 2025 4 is a year-long global initiative aimed at catalyzing ocean and climate action. Building on the multi-year theme “Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate,” the program engages youth leaders and organizations across over 180 countries. Each month focuses on a specific issue—ranging from ocean literacy and plastic pollution to sustainable fisheries and environmental justice—timed strategically around key policy opportunities. Through collaborations with international partners, the initiative provides resources, action steps, and advocacy tools to empower individuals and communities to drive meaningful change for a healthier, more sustainable ocean and planet.
