This year, the Guernsey Sailing Trust has been lucky enough to share the sea with some amazing creatures, turning ordinary sailing sessions into unforgettable adventures.

Dolphins – Our Playful Companions

Few moments compare to the thrill of spotting dolphins racing alongside our boats. These intelligent, social animals often appear in pods, leaping through the waves as if inviting us to join their game.

Puffins – The Colourful Visitors

The puffin is a true icon of the Bailiwick. With their bright beaks and quirky charm, these seabirds are a rare treat for sailors and birdwatchers alike. We’ve seen them bobbing on the water around the back of Jethou.

Starfish – Hidden Treasures Beneath

Not all wildlife encounters happen above the surface. During low tide we’ve spotted starfish on the sea bed. These fascinating creatures remind us of the delicate ecosystems that thrive just below our keels.

Shags – The Elegant Divers

Often mistaken for cormorants, shags are sleek, dark seabirds with a talent for diving. Their presence is a sign of rich fishing grounds and a balanced marine habitat.

Ruddy Turnstones – The Coastal Foragers

These small, striking waders are a delight to spot along Guernsey’s rocky shores. Ruddy Turnstones are known for their habit of flipping over stones and seaweed in search of food. Their patterned plumage and busy movements add life to our winter coastline when they migrate south from the Arctic. Often found on the wall behind the Trust sheltering from westerly winds.

Why These Encounters Matter

Every wildlife sighting is a reminder of the complex ecosystem that we live in. We all must protect our planet and respect those who share it by promoting our ocean’s health. By sailing responsibly, we help ensure that dolphins, puffins, and countless other species continue to thrive.
