RYA/MCA Small Craft Basic Sea Survival Course

The RYA/MCA Small Craft Basic Sea Survival Course is a vital one-day training programme designed for anyone venturing offshore—whether for leisure or professional purposes. Developed in accordance with Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) standards, this course provides the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to survive at sea in the event of an emergency.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of how to maximise their chances of survival, make effective use of onboard safety equipment, and respond appropriately in life-threatening situations.

Minimum Age Recommended minimum age is 13–14 years. This course is not suitable for young children. Children are enrolled at parent’s/guardian’s discretion. Most participants will be adults.
Fitness Requirements Participants must be comfortable in the water and be physically capable of climbing a ladder unaided.

Usually run as an one day course, the morning would be a classroom session at the Guernsey Sailing Trust and the afternoon practical pool exercises at an offsite location. Transport and lunch in between these sessions are not provided.
