Renowned sailor Conrad Humphreys and Bounty’s End (his boat made famous in the Channel 4 documentary, Mutiny) will be visiting Guernsey thanks to sponsorship from the Garenne Group, from the 8th July to 20th July 2019.
Mr Humphreys is a triple round-the-world yachtsman and competed as the youngest entrant in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race (now Volvo Ocean Race). As skipper, he led his team to victory in the BT Global Challenge. He also became the fifth British yachtsman in history to complete the legendary Vendée Globe, single-handed, non-stop around the world without assistance.
Most recently Mr Humphreys was the professional skipper onboard the tiny 23ft open boat, Bounty’s End, in the recreation of Captain Bligh’s epic story of survival, Mutiny on the Bounty, for Channel 4. Using traditional navigation equipment and surviving off the same meagre rations as Bligh, nine men were cast adrift 35 miles to the south of Tofua near the Kingdom of Tonga in a replica boat. Their mission, to survive and safely navigate across 4,000 miles of open ocean to Kupang, Timor and recreate one of the world’s greatest open boat voyages of British history.
Guernsey Sailing Trust General Manager Sarah Creasey said: “We’re thrilled that Conrad is bringing Bounty’s End to Guernsey. Schoolchildren from across the Island’s schools will get the chance to go sailing with Conrad. This experience will not only offer them the chance to learn new physical skills in sailing, but also develop skills such as teamwork, communication and problem solving, as well as increasing confidence and imagination.
“Conrad’s visit is not limited to children, we are also offering businesses’ and groups’ the chance to meet and sail with Conrad. This is a rare opportunity to spend some time with a modern day adventurer.”
Mr Humphreys will also be giving a public talk on Wednesday 10th July at 7.30pm and spending time at the Guernsey Sailing Trust with the Island’s young sailors.
“The Bounty’s End makes for great experiences for all those who sail with her,” he said. “While on board we focus on teamwork and learning new skills and I can’t wait to meet everyone that is keen to take her out on the waters around Guernsey.”
Garenne Group Director and Geomarine MD, Tom Whitmore said, “We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to work with the Guernsey Sailing Trust in bringing Conrad over to Guernsey. We hope the ‘Evening with Conrad’ will be well attended on the 10th July and we can’t wait to hear more about his exploits during his sailing career. Most of all we are looking forward to hearing the feedback from the young people who are getting the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the Bounty’s End and the vast knowledge Conrad brings to sailing.”
If you would like to meet and sail with Conrad, please contact Sarah at the Guernsey Sailing Trust. The cost of 2 hours with Conrad is £750. The boat can take up to 7 people at one time, however, we can also discuss adding additional boats if you would like to get more people out on the water. Time slots are available most days, between 3pm and 7pm. Please do not hesitate to contact us and as we would love to work with you to create an afternoon or evening suited to you!
We hope that you will all take up this opportunity to meet and sail with a modern day sailing legend!
